What is the right to disconnect?
The right to disconnect is an employee’s right not to be connected to work-related digital tools (email, messaging, notifications) outside working hours, in order to protect rest time and personal life.
In France, it is set out in article L2242-17 (7°) of the French Labor Code, introduced by the Labor Law (loi Travail) of August 8, 2016 and in force since January 1, 2017. Its implementation is handled through company-level bargaining or, failing that, an employer charter.
